Germany’s Black Forest is a surreal cluster of dense forests and pristine lakes dotted over the mountains. In the heart of it all is Feldberg ski resort, which recently hosted several events for the FIS World Cup Ski Cross and is currently celebrating its 125th year as the region’s ski mecca. This family-friendly ski resort is nicely laid out, with a variety of pistes for all levels, an inviting snowpark and a smattering of mountainside restaurants. Snowplaza spent a day exploring everything the resort has to offer and brings you the best of Feldberg!
Fresh snow and beautiful spring skiing conditions promise a perfect morning of skiing on Feldberg’s Seebuck mountain. We take the state-of-the-art 7-seater cable car up to the top and start the day off with the Seebuckabfahrt (red piste #3), a wide sweeping slope with a great view of the surrounding mountains. Once we’re nice and warmed up we test our skills on the Seebuck Funpark. I'm not usually a freestyler but this park has lots of rails and jumps of all shapes and sizes, so I eagerly join in the fun.

Looking for a bit more of a challenge, we make our way to the Grafenmatt mountain, which offers mostly red and black pistes. The World Cup run (black piste #14) from the FIS competition earlier this year is fantastic, and the Ahornbühl (black piste #13) has some nice bumps. We work our way back to the middle of the mountain and ski the Grafenmatt (blue piste #8) a few times. At the bottom are some very appealing restaurants that call out to us. Checking the time, we notice it’s already noon – time to break for a bite to eat!
After what seems like hours of skiing, it’s finally time to fill our growling stomachs. Usually mountain huts are super expensive, but Feldberg is amazingly good value and we find a wooden hut just off blue piste #8 with a great vibe and enormous hamburgers for 10 euros. It’s so sunny that we can sit outside in t-shirts and watch the skiers go by. Nearby is a buzzing tent full of après-skiers and that classic German après-ski music. We’ll keep it in mind for later!

With our bellies full, it’s time to head back out on the slopes. We haven’t explored the other side of the Grafenmatt yet so we decide to do that, where we find the snow is just as good as in the morning. We spend an agreeable afternoon skiing red piste #7 and blue piste #9 until our legs can take no more – it’s 4pm, time to grab a drink!

There’s a lovely looking bar at the base station, close to the bottom of red piste #3. We quickly return our rental skis and boots at the nearby Ski School Thoma and return to the bar, where we buy a few drinks. Somehow we manage to score some super-comfy deck loungers which offer a perfect view of the last skiers on the Seebuck. Some of those freestylers in the Seebuck Funpark are pretty impressive! As the sun gets lower in the sky, we loll contentedly on our loungers. It’s been the perfect day!

Feldberg always has something happening. Later this month young skiers and snowboarders will have the chance to show off their freestyling skills when the

makes a stop at Feldberg. Shortly after is the
Masters Ski Race, open to everybody. And keep an eye out for the

Born and raised in the ski paradise of Vancouver, Canada, I learned to ski before I can remember, balancing precariously on my parents’ skis as they sailed down the hill. I started snowboarding in my teens and am now delighted to be exploring everything Europe’s ski scene has to offer!
