But if you are not tied to school holidays and still have some days off left, you should really try a winter holiday in November. The ski resorts then are still nice and quiet, you will practically be the only one on the slopes, and there will hardly be any queues for the ski lifts. Without a doubt, skiing in November has many advantages!
Davos Klosters: ski season opening on 18 November
The ski resort of Davos Klosters has over 300 km of slopes spread over several ski mountains, not all of which are interconnected. This resort caters to all skier types, from advanced to beginners. When there, take advantage of the amazing 12 km downhill from the Weissfluhgipfel, which boasts an altitude of more than 2,000 metres. It is a wonderful but challenging descent, passing beautiful slopes as well as steeper strips. So make sure your fitness level is up to scratch!
Gurgl: ski season opening on 17 November
The ski resort of Gurgl is located at the end of the Ötztal valley and is known for its excellent snow conditions. Its more than 110 kilometres of pistes are incredibly varied and facilitated by a modern lift network. Queues are rare here! Besides, Gurgl offers something for everyone. Half of the pistes are marked red, but there are also wonderful blue runs for beginners, as well as plenty of challenges for advanced skiers. The pistes above the villages of Obergurgl and Hochgurgl are connected by the Topexpress. With a multi-day ski pass (3 days and more), you also have access to the slopes of Sölden (opens in September).
Les Trois Vallées: ski season opening on 26 November
With 600 km of slopes, Les Trois Vallées is one of Europe's largest interconnected ski areas. There are beautiful ski tours to ski and slopes for every level of ability. Snow conditions here are excellent, with the ski area reaching up to 3,200 metres. Because the area is so large, you can always find slopes that are quiet. Les Trois Vallées consists of 3 valleys: Val Thorens, Méribel and Courchevel. It is also possible to buy a separate ski pass for only one of these areas. From November to early May, several glaciers provide snow-sure skiing. Les Trois Vallées also offers numerous international events, several snow parks and good off-piste possibilities.
Obertauern: ski season opening on 25 November
Obertauern is one of the snowiest ski resorts in the Alps. Not surprisingly, you can ski here as early as November! The ski area boasts over 100 km of slopes, 60 km of which are blue. As a result, families with children and beginners will quickly feel at home here. But there is also plenty to do for advanced skiers! There are some challenging pistes in Obertauern. You can experience the great ski tour of Tauernrunde or try yourself on the slopes of the Super Seven. 3 Zinnen Dolomites: ski season opening on 12 November
The 3 Zinnen Dolomites ski area is located in the breathtaking mountain world of the Dolomites, a mountain range which is also a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled in the Hochpustertal valley in South Tyrol, this ski area owes its name to the three most characteristic peaks of the Dolomites. The resort boasts some 115 km of slopes, spread across five ski mountains that are not all connected. When in the area, try the Giro delle Cime ski tour. Also challenging is the 'Holzriese' run, one of the steepest runs in Italy. The 3 Zinnen Dolomites ski area caters to all types of skiing enthusiasts. Both beginners and advanced skiers will feel at home here in no time.
Silvretta Arena Ischgl - Samnaun: ski season opening on 24 November
Silvretta Arena Ischgl - Samnaun is a large, vibrant ski area with modern lifts and wonderful runs. The slopes here are not only in Austria but also in Switzerland. From Swiss Samnaun and Austrian Ischgl, you can access almost 240 km of slopes, reaching a maximum altitude of 2,872 metres. Sporty skiers, in particular, will feel at home here, although there are also many great slopes for beginners. When in the area, try out the Smuggler's Run ski circuit in three variants that take you along the historical smuggling routes between the Austrian Ischgl and the Swiss Samnaun. Depending on your skiing level, you can go for the golden, silver or bronze route.
Ski Center Latemar: ski season opening on 25 November
Ski Center Latemar is the largest ski area in Obereggen & Val di Fiemme. It can be accessed from Pampeago, Obereggen and Predazzo. In total, this ski area has 42 km of slopes suitable for all types of skiers. These include the challenging Torre di Pisa run and wide blue slopes on the Ganischger Alm. There are three children's areas at Ski Center Latemar, perfect for families with children. The Obereggen snowpark is one of the best snowparks in Italy, featuring a halfpipe, three different lines (easy, medium and pro) and much more!
Jungfrau Region: ski season opening on 26 November
The Jungfrau Region is formed by the towns of Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren. You can ski here in three different ski areas with over 280 km of slopes. These are not all interconnected, but with the ski bus, you can easily commute back and forth. The Kleine Scheidegg - Männlichen ski area is the largest and most challenging. The Jungfrau Region's slopes are mainly blue and red, ideal for beginners and families with children. All the villages in the region are charming and provide cosy après-ski opportunities where you can party until late. There are also many kilometres of winter hiking trails, beautiful toboggan runs and many other activities. And an interesting fact - the Schilthorn ski resort was once the setting for the James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
Adelboden-Frutigen-Lenk: ski season opening on 26 November
Adelboden-Frutigen-Lenk is a varied ski area with over 200 km of slopes and around 50 lifts. The slopes are diverse and attractive for all types of skiers. Due to its high altitude, the ski season here is pretty long. You can keep skiing well into spring! The villages of Adelboden and Lenk are located in different valleys but are connected by several pistes. This is super handy - considering that otherwise, it is about 80 km of steering by car from one valley to the other!
Zauchensee-Flachauwinkl: ski season opening on 26 November
One of the first ski areas to open at the end of November is Zauchensee-Flachauwinkl, part of the Salzburger Sportwelt and Ski amadé. Skiing here is possible on some 70 km of slopes. On 8 December, the Snow Space Salzburg's connections open as well, adding an additional number of available pistes. The slopes reach an altitude of 2,100 metres and are spread across the Rosskopf, Gamskogel and Tauernkar ski mountains. This ski area is very snow-sure and also features an excellent snowpark.
Kronplatz: ski season opening on November 26
Also opening in November is the Italian ski resort Kronplatz. It features more than 100 kilometres of slopes located on the Kronplatz mountain. This ski resort is especially popular with families as almost 60 km of slopes are blue! Modern lifts take you up from various points, and long queues are practically non-existent here. The area also offers hiking and cross-country skiing opportunities. For example, cross-country skiing enthusiasts can enjoy around 200 km of trails. Kronplatz is also part of the Dolomiti Superski ski region, making the possibilities in the heart of winter really extensive. The Dolomiti Superski ski region boasts over 1,200 km of slopes, all of which can be accessed with the same ski pass.
