Skiing at Red Mountain started in the late 1800’s when Scandinavian miners came to nearby Rossland to try their luck with the gold rush and subsequently organised ski races from the top of Red Mountain. Rossland is set in such a spectacular setting in the Kootenay Rockies that it attracts many artists, whose works are on display in the town’s many art galleries. This is one of the best places for skiing in Canada if you’re interested in discovering a genuine Canadian town and enjoying friendly Canadian hospitality during your holiday.
After a day of shredding the champagne powder snow at Red Mountain Resorts, après-ski is mostly in the form of a cold Canadian beer at Rafters or at one of the pubs in town. Hit the shops on historic Columbia Avenue or work out the skiing kinks at the spa. If you’re interested in the local culture, be sure not to miss this chance to see a performance of the Rossland Gold Fever Follies musical comedy. Wine buffs, sample some BC wine at the Columbia Gardens vineyard, and if you’re more into beer, be sure to try a pint of local brew at the Rossland Beer Company. Rossland is a three-and-a-half hour drive from Kelowna International Airport.
Alternate activities
Red Mountain Resort also offers catskiing, heli-skiing, adaptive snow sports, 40km of cross-country trails including some floodlit ones for night skiing, fat biking, snowshoeing and fondue dinner experiences in a remote cabin. The town of Rossland has ice skating, curling, live jazz nights, a farmer’s market, a mining and skiing museum, an aquatic centre, squash courts, bowling, a cinema and an arena where you can catch a local hockey game.
Restaurants and bars
The anti-corporate vibe at Red Mountain Resort extends to the restaurants and other facilities, which are proudly non-corporate. You won’t find a Starbucks here - instead, tuck into a plate of nachos at Rafters or grab a sausage at the European-inspired Wiener Take All. Nearby Rossland has more options and prides itself on its sustainable cuisine featuring fresh local ingredients.
Families
There are plenty of activities to keep the kids occupied during a ski holiday at Red Mountain Resort. Ski lessons start from age 3 and Red Daycare at the ski resort provides childcare for children ages 18 months to 5 years old.
