Berchtesgaden in short

Berchtesgaden is not what you would call a "real" ski resort, as most of the slopes in the Berchtesgadener Land ski area are located a few kilometres away from the Berchtesgaden village centre. Nevertheless, ski holidays in Berchtesgaden offer no shortage of activities off the slopes, including relaxing at the spa and visiting the old town centre. Of course, the main attraction is the ski area, Berchtesgadener Land, which is relatively vast and split into six separate ski areas: Jenner, Götschen, Rossfeld, Obersalzberg, Hochshwarzeck and Zinken.

In the Obersalzberg ski area, directly above the resort of Berchtesgaden, families and beginners will feel right at home. Flat, wide pistes without any major, technical challenges offer a perfect introduction area to alpine skiing. However, this area is not only adapted for beginners! With the Eckerbichl lift taking you up to some difficult terrain, more advanced skiers will be over the moon too. The other ski resorts in the Berchtesgaden area offer 50 kilometers of varied, sunny slopes, some of which are particularly challenging - for example the Jenner (1,874 m). There is also a great choice of cross country trails which are easily accessible with the ski bus. The nearest airport to Berchtesgaden is Salzburg.

Six ski areas at Berchtesgaden

The Jenner ski area offers challenging slopes next to Lake Königssee. Night skiing is available on Wednesdays at the Rossfeld ski area and on Fridays at Götschen Ski Center. Families should best head to Gutshof Obersalzberg, which has a dedicated Kinderland. The Zinken Ski Center also offers practice lifts and beginner slopes that are perfect for practising turns. Last but not least is the Hochschwarzeck ski area, which in addition to normal and practice lifts also offers a snow-tubing lift! For the most part, the ski areas are fairly easily accessible via ski bus or gondola.

Endless cross-country skiing trails

The region around the Berchtesgadener Land has over 100 kilometres of groomed trails for cross-country skiing. The trails offer spectacular views of the winter landscapes and are suitable for both classic track and skate skis. Snowmaking facilities ensure reliable snow cover almost all winter long. For a unique experience, the cross-country trails also open for night skiing on Tuesday and Friday evenings.

Off the slopes in Berchtesgaden

Before you go, don't miss a visit to the toboggan run at the Obersalzberg, one of the longest toboggan routes in the region at 3.5km long. Adrenaline junkies can also have a go at paragliding, or enjoy the panoramic views from a hot air balloon. Berchtesgaden isn't exactly known for its wild après-ski scene, but the town offers a cosy collection of restaurants, bars and cafes. The most original is undoubtedly the restaurant located inside an old salt mine. Berchtesgaden was historically a salt mining community, and this culinary experience offers the chance to relive a part of history. Take the mine train 650m down into the salt dome and tuck into traditional cuisine in a romantic candlelit setting with live musical accompaniment. A must-see!
