Rich history
Voss is situated in Hordaland, among some of Norway’s most beautiful scenery. Snowy mountain peaks, deep valleys, forests, rivers, waterfalls and lakes make an impressive backdrop to this winter sport paradise. Voss lies in the heart of the Norwegian fjords, between the Sognefjord and the Hardangerfjord.
An ancient town with a rich history, Voss still has a number of traditional buildings. Among them are a stone church from 1277 and the Finnesloftet, a wooden guild house from the 13th century, the oldest in Northern Europe. Sadly, many of the historical buildings were destroyed during the war and replaced with less-attractive modern buildings. Voss also has several museums, including the Folkemuseum, an outdoor museum that showcases traditional Norwegian monuments. Voss is an ideal base for adrenaline junkies. Skiing, skydiving and paragliding are all practised in the vicinity. Indoor activities include swimming and floating along a windtunnel, and there are also outdoor jacuzzi and sauna facilities for those in search of relaxation. There is a varied restaurant scene with Italian, Japanese, Chinese and of course Norwegian food, as well as a good assortment of bars and pubs. The town centre is lively, with plenty of shops to browse.
