Aviemore in short

  • Height: 214 metres
  • Located in the pristine wilderness of the CairnGorms National Park
  • Lively town with restaurants, bars and family-friendly activities
  • Challenging ski and snowboard terrain

Reaching an altitude of 1230m, CairnGorm Mountain is located in the CairnGorms National Park and offers lovely views of the surrounding valleys. The ski area has a reputation as one of the most challenging in Scotland, with a snow park plus 32km of pistes as well as off-piste and cross-country skiing.

Just a 20-minute drive from CairnGorm Mountain, Aviemore is a great jumping-off point for snowsports in the CairnGorms National Park. It is a sizeable town with a good selection of restaurants and bars, as well as lots of activities for the kids. Cross-country skiers will be happy to know that ski touring routes are easily accessible from the village center.

Alternate activities

Apart from skiing and snowboarding, winter at Aviemore and CairnGorm offers sledging, cross-country trails and backcountry skiing. There are swimming pools at the Macdonald Aviemore Resort and the Hilton Coylumbridge. Kids will love to feed the reindeer, and on rainy days, a ride up the funicular is always a nice way to spend the day!

Restaurants and bars

For that après-ski feel, visit the excellent Cairngorm Brewery or the Old Bridge Inn with its log fire. La Taverna and Roo’s Leap are good restaurant options. If you’re looking to go out, there are several nightclubs in Aviemore, of which the most popular is probably the Winking Owl.

Families

The Aviemore Activity Centre and the RoseBuds Daycare at the Hilton Coylumbridge have every facility to keep your tots amused while you take a well-deserved break. CairnGorm is a beginner mountain with a ski and snowboard school and makes a great place for a family holiday with the children.
